Large old trees are often under threat particularly in urban areas, highlighting them in my work draws attention to their value and importance. I have sketched this location several times and wanted to explore the surface and texture of this particular tree in paint. Close looking revealed a rhythm of cracks and crevices along with a quite colourful patina that comes from exposure to the elements and the diverse moss and lichens that live upon the surface. All of which helped form a palette for this work.

My eye was also drawn to the combination of the bright sunlight and contrasting branch shadows. The sun added a glow to the Autumn leaf colour on the ground and the background trees.

I wanted to use my mark making to express the age and personality of the tree and its position in the landscape as harmonious composition.

Alexandra Palace appears behind the line of trees. Always on the horizon in my part of North London times it is a regular motif in my work.

This painting is also avalable as a fine art print.
