Caballos Jinetes Cubanos (Cuban horse riders), stretched and up on the wall at the ESOP studio for the first time. This is a project I have been working on for some time exploring ideas around this topic with collage, drawings, a variety of oil sketches, through to this final triptych.
Cuban Cowboys
The importance of the cattle industry dwindled after the Cuban revolution ended in 1959, but the passion for rodeo has remained. In the Cuban countryside, many children learn to ride a horse before they learn to ride a bicycle. According to some, rodeo in Cuba is second only to baseball, the national sport. Cowboy culture is very much alive across Cuba.
The scene in my paintings started with an unexpected meeting of a lively crowd of Cuban cowboys in Trinidad (Cuba). They were there to see and be seen along with some lively horsemanship up and down a few cobbled streets. It is a vivid memory.
